It is with a heavy heart that Conectas says goodbye to sociologist and human rights advocate Pedro Paulo Poppovic, a friend and inspiration who ed away today, at the age of 97, after a life of uncountable contributions to the consolidation of Brazilian democracy. 1m2q3d
Pedro Paulo had a key role in the foundation and history of Conectas. For many years, he conceived and worked as an editor for SUR – International Human Rights Magazine.
“Pedro Paulo inspired multiple generations that entered Conectas. Always carrying a smile on his face and speaking words of encouragement, he helped young activists hold fast to their dream of fighting for a fairer world. We shall miss him immensely and attempt to honor him in our actions in defense of human rights in Brazil and in the Global South”, says Camila Asano, Chief Executive Officer at Conectas.
In addition to his work for the organization, Poppovic offered a remarkable contribution in his roles, whether in the public sphere, in academia, or in the editorial world.
“Pedro Paulo was an extraordinary figure, both as a publisher, an intellectual, and an educational manager. A restless mind, with multiple interests and avid reading habits. He was radically committed to democratic values. Those who had the privilege of a closer relationship with him were welcomed with affection and enthusiasm. Pedro radiated with energy and intelligence, strengthening all those who approached him. We shall miss Pedro greatly, but he also leaves an enormous legacy that challenges us to keep fighting for a fairer world”, states Oscar Vilhena Vieira, founder of Conectas and member of the institution’s Deliberative Council.
At this moment of intense grief, we extend our solidarity and love to Pedro Paulo’s family. May they find comfort in the immense legacy he built and the iration of so many people touched by his trajectory.
